General FAQ

Yes

Pet insurance works on a reimbursement basis, similar to an “out of network” policy. Therefore, all bills need to be paid at the time of the appointment. However, we can assist you to file your pet insurance claim forms to your insurance company.

Yes, we operate on an appointment schedule. However, we allow space on our schedule to accommodate same-day emergencies so please call us if you need to come in.

Yes, we offer emergency and urgent care. We specifically allow space on our schedule to accommodate same-day emergencies.

You can call, text, or email us, or you can always make an appointment online through our pet portal.

If you need to cancel your appointment, please give us a call at least 24 hours in advance or you may be assessed a late cancel fee.

No, unfortunately we do not. All bills need to be paid at the time of service.

Medical Records. Please make sure to obtain a complete set of your pets medical records including exam notes, laboratory tests, and radiographs. Please email the complete set to us at records@universityanimalhospital.com

Paperwork. Please fill out our registration form, canine/feline checklist, and/or any other documents we send to you 24 hours prior to your appointment.

Medications. Please bring in a list of your pet’s medications so that we can accurately record them in your pet’s file.

Insurance. If your pet has insurance, please bring a blank submission form with you if you would like us to assist you in submitting your pet’s claim.

Payment. We accept cash, and all credit cards. Unfortunately, we do not accept personal checks. All payments are due at the time of service. A deposit may be required.

All dogs need to be leashed on our premises, and cats must remain in their carrier.

Pet Care

Your veterinarian will determine which vaccinations are appropriate for your dog, based on individual factors, such as your pet’s age, lifestyle and health status. Veterinarians commonly recommend that dogs be vaccinated against Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, and Bordetella. Additional vaccines, such as Lyme, Leptospirosis, and Canine Influenza are recommended based on your dog’s risk for exposure. Many of these diseases can be fatal to your pet. Preventing them is far easier and less expensive than treatment. If you would like more information on vaccines, ask your veterinarian.

Veterinarians commonly recommend that cats be vaccinated against rabies and FVRCP (feline distemper). Many of these diseases can be fatal to your pet. Preventing them is far easier and less expensive than treatment. If you would like more information on vaccines, ask your veterinarian.

There are pros and cons to the timelines of when to spay/neuter your pet that are very patient and breed specific. It’s best to have this conversation with one of our veterinarians during your appointment.

Yes, as part of our concierge service, we offer nail trims and anal gland expressions with our nurses. Your pet must be healthy, have been seen recently by one of our doctors, and up to date on core vaccines.

It can be dangerous or even fatal to administer heartworm preventative if your pet has heartworms, so we require a negative heartworm test before we dispense or approve prescriptions for heartworm prevention.

It's common for pets to experience some mild side effects after receiving a vaccine. You should talk with your veterinarian about what to expect after vaccination and be sure to inform him or her if your pet has had prior reactions to any vaccine or medication. More serious, but less common side effects, such as allergic reactions, can be life-threatening and are medical emergencies. Seek veterinary care immediately if any of these signs develop:
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Itchy skin that may seem bumpy ("hives")
  • Swelling of the muzzle and around the face, neck, or eyes
  • Severe coughing or difficulty breathing
  • Collapse

Vomiting and Diarrhea can be caused by many different things. If your pet is experiencing vomiting and/or diarrhea, please give us a call so we can schedule an appointment with one of our doctors.

At every exam, our doctor performs a thorough physical exam. Bad breath, trouble eating, or discoloration of the teeth or gums may all be indicators that your pet may need a dental procedure. We will show you and discuss the benefits of a dentistry if it is recommended.

We follow all Federal and State laws and guidelines when prescribing medications. To remain compliant, your pet must be physically examined on a periodic basis. Typically this means your pet will need to be examined a minimum of once per year. However, for some medications, your pet may need to be reexamined more frequently and may require blood tests prior to refilling medications.
