Dental care is more than just a cure for bad breath. Just like people, pets need preventative dental health care to avoid painful problems later in life.

Here are some things to think about while you’re brushing your teeth:

More 8 out of 10 dogs, and 7 out of 10 cats show signs of poor dental health by the age of three.

Dental problems in pets – as in people – can lead to pain, tooth loss, and periodontal disease

Pets’ oral disease invariably progresses with time, as does people’s, and can result in damage to internal organs, including the heart, liver and kidneys.

Poor dental care affects more than just your pet’s mouth. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and damage your pet’s liver, kidneys, lungs and heart. A proper dental care routine can add 3-5 years to your pet’s life.

Call (212) 288-8884 to schedule ’s appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Canine Influenza is a relatively new disease caused by a “flu” virus (similar to the human flu). Although it is overall not a serious disease, it can be very contagious. A few cases can also progress to significant illness and pneumonia.

It is spread through direct contact between dogs (licking, nuzzling) even while dogs are not currently coughing or showing any other signs of illness.

When it comes to purchasing veterinary drugs online, buyers should beware, says a top official from the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine.

In fact, in a consumer alert issued today, Dr. Martine Hartogensis, director of FDA’s Office of Surveillance and Compliance, says that while some websites selling veterinary drugs represent legitimate businesses, others do not.

In fact, FDA regulators have documented unscrupulous practices relating to the sale of unapproved and counterfeit pet drugs, dispensing of Rx drugs without a prescription and sale of expired drugs. Some sites make fraudulent claims about a drug’s effectiveness, while others dispense drugs without a prescription or ship expired drugs to unsuspecting pet owners.

And while the risk is present for consumers purchasing bogus, unapproved products through foreign and domestic pharmacies, “CVM is especially concerned that pet owners are going online to buy two types of commonly used prescription veterinary drugs — non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) drugs and heartworm preventives.” Both drugs can be dangerous if given without involvement by veterinarians, Hartogensis reports.

Without a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship, she calls the practice dangerous.

University Animal Hospital is committed to keeping your pet healthy and safe and providing the best possible care available, which is why we have a full pharmacy on the premises.

To learn more, watch the F.D.A. video on the topic on the agency’s consumer updates page.

Proctor and Gamble voluntarily recalled two specific lots of renal dry cat food on June 25,2010 due to a possible salmonella health risk. As a further precaution, Proctor and Gamble is now expanding the voluntarily recall to include additional veterinary formulas and some specialized Eukanuba dry pet food.

No illnesses have been reported, but in cooperation with the FDA, P&G
determined that some product may have been contaminated. As a precautionary measure, P&G is suspending operations at the facility these items were made and recalling all dry pet food manufactured within this plant.

No canned food, biscuits/treats, or supplements are affected by this announcement.

Products Involved:

Iams Veterinary Formulas — All dry sizes and varieties.

Eukanuba Naturally Wild — All dry sizes and varieties

Eukanuba Pure – All dry sizes and varieties

Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin — All dry sizes

If you have purchased any food on the recall list, please throw away any unused food and contact P&G at 877-340-8823 to get directions on how to get a refund. No receipts are necessary, and refunds apply to unopened bags as well as party used bags.

Anyone owning the food should throw it out. Pets can become infected and people handling the dry pet food can become infected with salmonella as well if they do not wash their hands.

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause illness in people and pets. If your pet has eaten the product(s) mentioned above and is experiencing diarrhea, fever, or vomiting, please make an appointment with your veterinarian. If you or one of your family members has handled any of these products and is experiencing any symptoms, please contact your physician immediately.
